Melatwork Hailu sworn in as Chairwoman of Election Board

ADDIS ABABA – Melatwork Hailu has been appointed as chairperson of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE).

The former CEO of NEBE’s office assumed the top post at the election board, replacing  Birtukan Mideksa who resigned as chairman in July.

Melatwork was among the two candidates selected by the recruitment committee after screening 54 individuals proposed by the public.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who set up the committee to find the next chairperson, eventually picked her as his nominee.

The House of People’s Representatives (HPR) approved Melatework’s appointment as chairwoman of the election board.

The resolution to confirm her as chairwoman received a majority vote with one abstention during the 9th regular session on Tuesday.

Melatwork, who appeared before the House, was sworn in to carry out her responsibilities with loyalty and dedication.

Prior to her appointment, Melatwork, an MA graduate from Harvard University in public administration, served as the chief executive officer of the Office board for two years.
