Online Registrations Underway for Grade 12 National Exam

ADDIS ABABA – Grade 12 students begin registering for the national high school leaving exam of the current 2023/24 Ethiopian academic year.

The online registration for the exam – known as the Ethiopian Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination (ESSLCE) – started on Monday.

It will continue until the end of the current Ethiopian month of Yekatit on March 9, 2024, according to the Educational Assessment and Examination Service (EAES).

Hundreds of thousands of final-year high school students take the exam annually after completing 12 years of schooling. The results are used as a requirement for university admission.

Currently, high schools across the country are administering the online registration of grade 12 students in their regular and night education programs.

The EAES says students who have been pursuing their education in private and distant programs are required to get registered at the education bureaus of their respective districts or sub-cities.

In a press briefing today, EAES Deputy Director General Tefera Feyisa stressed that stakeholders at all levels need to be strict with the registration schedule.

Any request beyond the deadline set on March 9 will not be accepted, stated the deputy General director of the public institution responsible for developing and administering the exam.

Tefera also advised the students to be careful when entering their vital information during the online registration process. They need to make sure basic information such as the spelling of full name, gender, picture, gender, and education stream are correct, the deputy director said.

The grade 12 exam this year is scheduled to be administered on May 20-31, 2024, according to the national school calendar issued by the Ministry of Education last September.

Last year, close to 850, 000 students from 1,328 high schools took the ESSLCE administered inside public universities in the main July-August exam period. The results released a couple of months later saw only 3.2% of the total students score the passing mark.
