Central Bank Governor Holds Talks with Safaricom Senior Officials

ADDIS ABABA – Safaricom Telcom Ethiopia plc delegates led by Peter Ndegwa, held a meeting with Dr. Yinager Dessie, Governor of National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) on Monday.

This is the second High-Level meeting Safaricom officials held with government in the five days as the company continues preparation to launch commercial services.



During the meeting, Ndegwa highlighted the willingness of the government of Ethiopia to support Safaricom Ethiopia efforts has been encouraging .

Ndegwa said he looks forward to sharing the experience of Mobile Financial Systems from Kenya.

Dr. Yinager, on his part, expressed his gratitude to the Global Leadership team for their continued solidarity with Ethiopia.

The central Bank Governor noted mobile money can be a gateway to financial inclusion and they are eager to learn from the successes in Kenya.

Monday’s discussion also involved the Deputy Governers of the Central Bank of Ethiopia and leadership of the telecom firm, including Vodacom Group CEO Shameel Joosub, and.

The two sides last met in September during which Safaricom officials underlined the telecom firm to prepare itself to operate efficiently and in a competitive manner.

Safaricom Ethiopia is expected to start rolling out telecom services from 2022 and put a low Earth orbit satellite in place that will provide nationwide 4G coverage by 2023.
