PM Abiy Wishes Speedy Recovery to South African President from Covid
ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday wished South African President Cyril Ramaphosa a speedy recovery after he contracted Covid-19.
“I would like to express my wishes to my brother @CyrilRamaphosa for a speedy recovery,” Abiy tweeted.
In a statement earlier today, the Office of South African President announced that Ramphosa has been tested positive for Covid-19.
He is receiving treatment for mild Covid-19 symptoms after testing positive on Sunday, the office said.
According to reports, Ramaphosa was fully vaccinated and he recently returned from a trip to West Africa.
The 69-year-old tested negative for COVID-19 upon his return to Johannesburg on December 8, said his office, adding he is isolating himself in Cape Town.
‘Get Vaccinated’
In a tweet on Monday afternoon, Ramaphosa said “Thank you, fellow South Africans, for your good wishes following my COVID-19 positive result”.
“As I recover, my message of the week is: don’t let your guard down. Do everything you can and need to, to stay safe, beginning with vaccination,” he said.
“Vaccines dramatically reduce the chances of severe illness, hospitalization and death,” he said, urging South Africans to get vaccinated.
“Let’s all protect ourselves,” he added.
South Africa has seen a surge of infections since the new Omicron variant was first detected in November.
