AAU’s Leading Cancer Doctor Aynalem Abreha Passes Away

ADDIS ABABA – One of Ethiopia’s prominent but few oncologists Dr. Aynalem Abreha has passed away on Friday.

Dr. Aynalem has been serving as academic and medical staff of Addis Ababa University’s College of Health Sciences.

President of the University, Prof Tassew Woldehanna annouced his death today in a statement issued on the University’s official website.

“We received the tragic news of the passing away of Dr. Aynalem… with a very sad heart,” the professor said.

“It is a huge loss for the University as well as for the country,” he added.

Dr. Aynalem was a well known Oncologist and Head of the AAU Cancer Center and has dedicated his life to the service of cancer patients for many years at the Black Lion Specialized Hospital where he was based.

Ethiopia’s Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said she was “shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of Dr. Aynalem”.

The Minister described him as a “senior and prominent Oncologist who has dedicated his life to the service of cancer patients”.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his families and colleagues,” she said.

Despite Cancer is becoming one of the major health problems, there are only a handful of oncologists in working in Ethiopia.

Dr. Aynalem was one of them.
