Sixty-five Ethiopian Military officers Promoted to Rank of General

ADDIS ABEBA – Sixty-five senior Ethiopian military officers including five women have been promoted to the rank of general on Saturday.

President Sahelework Zewdie granted high-level military titles ranging from Brigadier General to Lieutenant General to the officers nominated by Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Ethiopian Armed Forces Abiy Ahmed.

Out of the 65 military generals, six are promoted to Lieutenant General, nineteen to major Generals and forty to Brigadier Generals.

Prime minister Abiy expressed his confidence that the newly promoted generals “will continue to serve their country with excellence and persistence” in a ceremony held at the Prime Minister Office.

The latest promotion aims at bringing forward heroes to the leadership position as part of the multifaceted reform program in the Ethiopian National Defence Force. Abiy Ahmed said the reform is bearing fruits.

“More women were promoted today to maintain gender equality in the military,” said Abiy who described the ENDF as “our national pride”.

General Adem Mohammed, Chief of Staff of the National Defence Force, said the promotion was made based on performances of the officers.
