World Athletics Championships: Habtam, Worknesh Progress to 800m semifinals

Ethiopia’s Habtam Aeme and Worknesh Meles have qualified for the women’s 800m semifinals on day five of the world athletics championships.

Habtam claims heat six win in 1:59.36 while Worknesh finishes third in the second heat in 2:00.13. The other Ethiopian Lomi Muleta failed to qualify after a sixth-place finish from group four.

The leading contenders of the women’s 800m all safely progress from the heats.

The defending champion Athing Mu won the final heat in 1:59.59 from Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin (1:59.64),

GB’s Olympic and world silver medallist Keely Hodgkinson takes heat one in 1:59.53 and Kenya’s world bronze medallist Mary Moraa wins heat two in 1:59.89.

Leading the other heats are Noelie Yarigo (1:59.96), Halimah Nakaayi (1:59.68), and Nia Akins (1:59.19).

The semifinals will be held on Friday at 20:25 local time.
