ADDIS ABABA – The newly formed National Dialogue Commission (NDC) has taken on board duties and responsibilities of two panels previously set up to resolve boundary and identity issues as well as help reconciliation efforts in Ethiopia.
The two panels are Administrative Boundaries and Identity Issues Commission or ABIIC, and National Reconciliation Commission or NRC.
Their respective commissioners, Tassew Gebre and Cardinal Berhaneyesus Souraphiel, handed over their respective responsibilities and duties to the Commisioner of the National Dialogue , Mesfin Araya, on Tuesday.
The handover ceremony took place during a meeting co-chaired by the Speakers of the lower and upper houses of Ethiopian Parliament.
The two Houses expressed their readiness to provide the necessary support and assistance to the National Dialogue Commission to maintain its freedom.
The Commission, accountable to the parliament, was formed last year with a range of responsibilities.Its main objectives include facilitating consultation between various segments of the society by identifying root causes of the difference on fundamental national issues.
The commission would also support the implementation of the recommendations gained from dialogue.
Speaker of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Tagesse Chafo said that the experience of the commissions could be used as benchmark for the NDC’s activities.
