Ethiopia, Israel Discuss ways to Deepen ties in Health Sector

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse discussed with Israeli delegation led by MP Gadi Yevarkan on ways of deepening partnership between the two countries in health sector.

The delegation involving medical doctors and members of the Israeli parliament, has been visiting Ethiopia since Monday, and met with several top government officials.

Their mission was aimed at supporting the reconstruction efforts of damaged health facilities due to the conflict in northern Ethiopia.

The delegation met with Health Minister Dr. Lia on Friday to confer about areas of cooperation.

“We discussed how to better support the humanitarian needs and the efforts on rehabilitation and restoration in conflict affected areas in Ethiopia,” the Minister said after the meeting.

The two sides further discussed ways to deepen the existing partnership between Israel and Ethiopia in the health sector in general and health institutions in particular.

In a tweet, Dr. Lia also said the meeting looked into bolstering partnership “particularly in capacity building in areas of advanced cardiac & surgical care, emergency medical & trauma management, rehabilitation and other specialities.”

A day before their discussion with Dr Lia, the delegation met with discussions with President Sahle-work Zewde and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen.

Deputy PM Demeke expressed the government’s appreciation to members of the delegation for taking such a constructive initiative at this critical time.

This timely initiative demonstrated the friendly relations between Ethiopia and Israel and would help cement the longstanding ties between the two countries, he told the delegation.
