Grand Mufti Calls for Support to Rehabilitate Displaced People in Amhara, Afar Regions

ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council has called on the public to support victims of TPLF’s aggressions in Amhara and Afar regions.

Nearly two million people have been displaced while many more are in need of immediate aid after the group invaded the two regions.

Apart from humanitarian disaster, the government said “the aftermath of the occupation has been tremendous destruction of public and private infrastructure” following the liberation of the invaded areas .

Call for Support

President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Mufti Hajji Omar Idris, has today urged Ethiopians and the international community to help displaced people return to their home and rehabilitate them.

Mufti also called on religious fathers to foster peaceful mechanisms to return the situation in northern Ethiopia to normalcy.

“We must overcome the challenges we face today with compassion and by supporting and helping each other,” said the president.

The Council has already formed a committee to mobilize resources to the victims and displaced persons in Amhara and Afar regions.

The committee is tasked to mobilize fund that will also be used to rehabilitate religious institutions and other public facilities destroyed by terrorist TPLF force, according to state-run Ethiopian News Agency.

Mufti urged all citizens to contribute their part in the effort to mobilize resources to rehabilitating infrastructures and support victims including IDPs.

The Council will also send a team to the regions to assess the damages religious institutions incurred, its President said.
