“Forces from outside are supporting the TPLF,” says State Minister

ADDIS ABABA – The government of Ethiopia has credible evidence that can confirm external forces are supporting the rebel group in the conflict in the northern part of the country, its state finance minister said.

The conflict began in November 2020 after Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces conducted deadly attacks on federal army bases in Tigray – forcing the central government to respond.

Speaking to DD India television, State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekalegn describe the amount of damage that has been inflicted on the people of Tigray, Amhara and Afar regions and the general public as “very painful”.

This was because, he said, the group didn’t see the opportunity for peaceful co-existence of nations across the country.

There are also outside forces who are trying to exploit the conflict, according to the state minister.

Dr. Eyob confirmed the presence of evidence that implicate “external forces” are trying to engage “a proxy war” in Ethiopia by supporting TPLF.

“Clearly, it’s not a conflict between one rebel group supposedly calling for ‘more independence,’” the minister said, calling the “war against the very stake of Ethiopia”.

“Forces from outside are supporting the TPLF,” he said. “We have credible evidence about satellite support, armament support which is very unfortunate because the stability of Ethiopia is very important for the entire region.”

“Ethiopia is the icon of stability in east africa. If Ethiopia is affected, then the rest of the East African region will be affected,”” he added.

When asked about who is supporting the TPLF, the state minister said he would “refrain from name calling”.

“But , clearly, those who are listening know what they have been trying to do,” he said.

“I want to assure them that Ethiopia will prevail… Any proxy war in Ethiopia has never succeeded and it never succeeds now,” Dr. Eyob stressed.
