Covid-19: Ethiopia Reports 1, 544 New Cases, 37 Deaths

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has recorded 1, 544 more Covid-19 cases and 37 related fatalities on Thursday, data from the ministry of health shows.

The country conducted nearly 9, 500 tests in the last twenty-four to confirm the positive cases, says the ministry in its daily Covid-19 report.

The national death toll has also reached 5, 291 after 37 patients succumbed to the disease in the reported period.

There are now 799 severely sick patients getting treatment in intensive care units, reports the ministry, which puts the active case count at 27, 790.

At least 455 patients have also recovered from the acute respiratory disease, pushing the recovery toll to 305, 223, according to the report.

Ethiopia confirmed its first case on March 13, 2020. Since then, it has recorded more than 338, 306 infections out of nearly 3.42 million tests conducted.

As the number of cases and fatalities increase, health officials are urging the public to wear face masks, practice social distancing and proper hand-washing as well as taking Covid-19 vaccines.

A total of 178, 780 doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the past 24-hours, shows the report.

Ethiopia started inoculating the public on March 13, 2021. To date, it has vaccinated close to 2.73 million people against the virus.
