EU Appreciates Improving Situation in Northern Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Minister of Justice Gedion Timothewos held talks with the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, in Brussels on Wednesday.

Commissioner Lenarcic welcomed Gedion, who is on a working visit in Brussels, at his office and exchanged views on a range of issues associated with the current situation in Ethiopia, particularly with regard to humanitarian access.

The two sides have also discussed efforts being made to bring perpetrators of human rights violations to justice as well as the Ethiopian government’s peace initiatives to bring an end to the conflict.

The Commissioner appreciated the progress being made in improving the situation in Northern Ethiopia, a statement Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels issued after the meeting.

The two sides agreed to work closely to further bolster the progress that has been achieved in various facets, according to Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels.

Lenarcic in a message posted on Twitter described his meeting with Gedion as an “important”, and discussed the “humanitarian situation in the country, especially the need to allow for full humanitarian access to Tigray or any other region with people in need.”

“The EU continues to stand with the people of Ethiopia,” said Commissioner Lenarcic, who will be visiting Ethiopia next week.

Apart from the Commissioner, Justice Minister Gedion also met Ferran Myriam, EU development cooperation official of International Partnership (INTPA), on Thursday and exchanged views on a wide range of issues, Ethiopian Embassy in Brussels said.

The issues discussed include the humanitarian supply to conflict-affected areas in the Northern part of Ethiopia, measures taken to ensure accountability for abuses committed during the conflict, the AU-led peacebuilding initiatives, and the resumption of budget support.

The representative of INTPA noted progress in the overall assessment in all three aspects and appreciated the progress being made in improving the situation in Northern Ethiopia, the embassy said.

Madam Ferran also expressed hope that sustainable peace will prevail through the ongoing AU-led process.

Justice minister Gideon is expected to hold discussions with EU officials about the current situation in Ethiopia during his visit to Brussels this week
