Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Lamecha Wins Silver in Men’s 3000m Steeplechase
ADDIS ABABA – Lamecha Girma takes Silver medal in the men’s 3,000 metres steeplechase final at the Olympic Stadium at the Tokyo Games on Monday.
Moroccan runner Soufiane El-Bakkali won the gold medal with a time of 8:08:90, ahead of Lamecha who finished second with a time of 08:10:38.
Benjamin Kigen claimed a bronze for Kenya after Ethiopia’s Getnet Wale, who was third heading to the final straight, fell. Getnet struggled back to his feet and clung on for fourth.
This is the first time a Kenyan has not won the event since the 1980 Games in Moscow.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan takes the win on Monday to claim part one of a potential Tokyo treble. Hellen Obiri of Kenya is second with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay third.
