Over 320mln Birr Worth Contraband Items seized in 30-day

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Revenue announced on Tuesday its custom officers have seized 320mln Birr worth contraband items and illicit funds in a month.

Of these, the ministry said about 235 million birr worth of items were seized while illegally entering the country in Megabit Month which runs between March 10 and April 8, 2021.

The remaining nearly 85 million birr worth contraband goods were intercepted as they were leaving the country via various routes.

The Ministry said the total goods seized in the month of Megabiy has shown a 144 percent increase as compared to its target set for the Month.

The amount has also shown a 72 percent increase as compared to the same thirty days of the previous fiscal year.

During the same month, at least 68 suspects engaged in illegal trade were arrested by customs and security officers.

The Ministry said most of the illegal items were seized in customs checkpoints located in Addis Ababa Airlines, Hawassa, Jigjiga, Dire Dawa, Moyale, Bahir Dar, Galafi, Jimma, Adama, Awash, Kombolcha, and Asosa.
