ADDIS ABABA – The United States aid agency said it has been providing emergency assistance for more than one million people affected by the conflict in Tigray since December, 2020.
“Using 848 trucks and hundreds of helping hands, we have provided 75 million pounds (or 34,000 metric tons) of food aid since December 2020, and we remain committed to helping many more,” said the USAID on Friday.
The agency, the US Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing the relief in partnership with Catholic Relief Services.
The Government of Ethiopia and its humanitarian partners are urging the international community to increase support to the on-going relief and reconstruction efforts in the region.
End of November, the UN World Food Program (WFP) made an US$107 million aid appeal to the international donors for its emergency response there.
The ongoing relief operation has so far reached out to nearly four million people with 780,534.6 quintals of food and 80mln birr worth of non-food items .
The federal government, which is responding to the dire humanitarian need of the ground by reallocating resources from other priority areas, is covering 70 percent of the support while donors made available 30 percent of the supply.
