Ministry of Agriculture to Acquire 10 aircrafts via National Airways

ADDIS ABABA – Ministry of Agriculture has signed on Friday a contractual agreement with National Airways for the procurement and management of aircrafts.

The ministry said acquiring the aircrafts will support country’s fight against desert locust and other infestations that have recently become a threat to the Agriculture sector.

At the signing ceremony, Oumer Hussien, the Minister of Agriculture, disclosed government’s plans to buy 10 aircrafts through National Airways, a local firm, for chemical spraying to desert locust controlling and other migratory pastes.

The government has already sanctioned the procurement of five of the aircrafts soon, the minister added.

The process would increase the amount of money the government invested in the fight against infestation in recent times. Ethiopia has already spent 4.8 billion Birr to control desert locust in the past 20 months.

On the same day, the ministry has agreed a 10 year contractual agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Hamid ALEISA EST livestock trading company for operation management service of Mile quarantine operation.

The Mille Quarantine Center with a potential to treat 400,000 export animals per year has been ineffective by treating only 60,000.

This agreement with Mohamed Hamid company helps to export quality live stocks with better standard and quantity, according to the Ministry.

Agriculture Minister Oumer said Mohammad Hamid ALEISA EST has good experience of live animal quarantine in different countries. “We believe it will do more here in Ethiopia,” he added.

Mille Quarantine Center is the biggest quarantine center in the country constructed with 120 million Birr.
