Federal Army Concludes Operation in Tigray after Capturing Mekelle City

ADDIS ABEBA – The Federal government of Ethiopia announced on Saturday its army has taken control of Mekelle City in their final assault against Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces.

The announcement came after the federal troops launched the final chapter of the law enforcement operation which targeted to control Mekelle City – final strong of TPLF forces.



Prime minister Abiy Ahmed has commended troops and the Tigray people for their cooperation during the operation saying “the people have shown their estrangement from the military Junta during the time of federal troops operation in various parts of the region ”.

Abiy has mentioned the control of the city carried out without civilian casualties due to the “utmost support and cooperation” the people of the region provided to the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) in all corners.

“I would like to express my appreciation to the people of Tigray who have understood the ENDF’s goodwill and duty to nation.”

The Prime Minister has vowed to swiftly repair infrastructures demolished by the TPLF forces in several parts of Tigray region.

“The main operation is successfully concluded,” he said. “We now have ahead of us the critical task of rebuilding what has been destroyed: repairing what is damaged; returning those who have fled, with utmost priority of returning normalcy to the people of the Tigray region”.

The PM also appreciated the concern shown by the international community. “And calls upon friends of Ethiopia to join hands in rebuilding the Tigray region and giving its people the respite, humanitarian assistance and security they deserve” he concluded.
