ADDIS ABEBA – Ethiopia has collected over 107.8 billion birr revenue from domestic tax, custom duties, and lottery sales in the first four months of the current 2020/21 fiscal year, Reveals Ministry of Revenue on Wednesday.
The figure is over 4bln birr higher than the government’s target for the period, which was 104.5bln birr, and 17.3bln birr higher than the revenue collected during the same period the previous fiscal year.
Lake Ayalew, Minister of Revenue, has attributed the increase in the number of taxpayers. The Ministry said around 2625 new businesses started to pay taxes during the period.
Strong administrative work and effective use of technologies have also contributed to the growth in the revenue during the period, according to Lake.
Of the collected revenue, the majority, amounting 75bln birr, was from domestic tax, and the remaining came from lottery sales, 83 million birr, and customs duties.
The overall performance shows that the ministry is on target to achieve its plan to garner 290 bln birr revenue in the current 2020/2021 fiscal year.
