Adanech Abiebie Becomes Mayor of Addis Ababa

ADDIS ABABA – City Council of Addis Ababa has approved Adanech Abiebie as deputy mayor of Addis Ababa in a capacity of a mayor on Tuesday.

Adanech, the first woman to head the city administration, replaced Takele Uma who served as mayor of Ethiopia’s capital for the past two years.

Addis Ababa City Council confirmed her appointment in a special meeting it held on Tuesday afternoon.

Out of the 85 members of the council present, Adanech’s appointment has received 77 yes, 6 against, and 2 abstaining votes.

“I’m honored to serve as mayor of the capital of the nation,” she said after she was sworn in as mayor in front of the city council.

“I would like to thank the outgoing mayor Takele for launching various ongoing activities that aim to make Addis Ababa a modern and beautiful city,” she said.

Apart from finishing up what has been started, Adanche said she will continue to work on various challenges that the city face including housing problems.

Prior to her latest appointment, Adanche served as Ethiopia’s attorney general since March 2020.
