Addis Ababa Launches Construction of Bus Rapid Transit

ADDIS ABABA – Addis Ababa city administration has launched the construction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) linking Jemmo to General Wingate area.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Deputy Mayor of the city Takele Uma (both pictured above) attended the launching event of the BRT Construction project on Saturday Morning.



The 20km long road will have bus stops at places in Addis Ketema, Lideta, Kirkos and Kolfe sub-cities, according to the Mayor’s Office of the City. A French contractor is tasked to carry out the construction project of the BRT, which will cost the government a total of 5.9bln birr.

Deputy Mayor Takele said that the expansion of mass transport services is among the measures being taken to address transportation challenges in the capital.

“Our city is growing and transforming daily. which put strain on transportation operations, he said, “However, residents will soon enjoy our Bus Rapid Transit”.

Addis Ababa has a plan to build twenty more supplementary Bus Rapid Transits across several parts of the capital, Engineer Takele said.
