Abiy Holds Talks with Islamic Affairs Supreme Council Members

ADDIS ABEBA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has met with representatives of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council and Ethiopian Muslim Arbitration Committee today.

The meeting, held at the PM office, came after members of the Council and Arbitration Committee expressed their desire to engage in cleaning ahead of the Meskel celebration.

The planned cleaning aims “to honor fellow Orthodox Christians”, says the office of the Prime Minister in a twitted statement on Wednesday.

Ethiopians Christian celebrates the annual Meskel festival on September 28 and is the first big festival of the Ethiopian calendar.

According to Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition, the national holiday marks the finding of the cross that Jesus was crucified on.

Thousands celebrated the eve of the festival, known as Demera, by gathering in Meskel Square in the heart of the capital city, Addis Ababa.
