ADDIS ABEBA – At least ten wedding-goers have been killed in a car accident occurred in East Hararge zone of Oromia regional state, police said on Tuesday.
The deadly accident happened on Monday night in a district called Goro Gutu when wedding goers hit by an Isuzu truck. The Truck was traveling to Addis Ababa from Jigjiga town.
Commander Seyoum Degefa, communication head of East Hararge zone police department, said the wedding-goers were walking from the groom’s house to the bride’s house.
Police said ten people were killed on the spot while five others sustained injuries various degrees, according to state-affiliated FBC’s report.
Police are searching for the driver of the car after he made a quick getaway from the accident scene.
In Ethiopia, the number of deaths due to traffic accidents is reported to be amongst the highest in the world.
According to the WHO, in 2013 the road crash fatality rate in Ethiopia was 4984.3 deaths per 100,000 vehicles per year, compared to 574 across sub-Saharan African countries.
