Record Breaker Athlete Tigist Assefa Receives Hero’s Welcome

World marathon record breaker Tigist Assefa was given a hero’s welcome at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on Friday.

Athlete Tigist defended her BMW Berlin Marathon title in style on Sunday, smashing the world record with 2:11:53.

On Friday morning, Tigist was welcomed back to Ethiopia by senior officials at the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

The officials include State Minister of Culture and Sport Mesfin Cherinet, Harar City Mayor Kedir Juhar, and the Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) President Derartu Tulu.

EAF President Derartu congratulated Tigist for her record-breaking victory, and those who helped her achieve this milestone.

Tigist grabbed the world’s fastest woman marathon runner title a week after another Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay smashed the 5000m world record with 14:00.21 and became the 2023 Diamond League champion.

The two athletes’ performance would serve as an inspiration for the Ethiopian team participating in World Athletics Road Running Championships Riga 23 on Sunday, Derartu said on Wednesday in an sending off event organized for participating athletes ahead of their departure on Thursday.
