EHRC: Security Forces ‘Behind Karayu Killing’

ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) accused government security forces in Oromia region of killing 14 Karayu’s Gada Michille leaders, on December 1, 2021.

EHRC’s report contradicts previous officials’ claim that blamed a terrorist-designated OLF-Shene for the killing.

The commission released the outcomes of its investigation – conducted between Dec 16 to 21, – on Wednesday.

In the report, EHRC said that there’s “reasonable ground to believe” that the killing of 14 members of the Gadaa leaders by security forces was “extrajudicial”.

The victims were taken from their homes to a nearby forest by the security forces and shot, it said.

The killings took place a day after the terrorist-designated group attacked members of the police force, killing 11 officers and injured 17 others, EHRC’s report added.

The regional government has not yet responded to the accusations.

The commission, however, urged that members of the security forces who committed the killings to be face justice and that the victims and families of the victims should be compensated.
