Authorities Asked to Disclose Whereabouts of Two Detained Media Personnel

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Wednesday said it is monitoring the situation of four media personnel who are currently in detention.

In a statement today, EHRC said its is in discussions with relevant authorities on the situation of Kibrom Worku, Tamrat Negera, Meaza Mohammed and Eyasped Tesfaye.

The Commission also said it “is gravely concerned that the whereabouts and the current situation” of Tamrat and Kibrom, “have not been disclosed to their families and legal counsel as of the time of release of this statement”.

This constitutes a violation of their visitation right, said the Commission.

Tamrat was detained on December 10, 2021 and Kibrom is in detention since October 26, 2021 despite a court order on Nov 18, granting him bail.

“Visitation rights should be respected and guaranteed even under a state of emergency,” it said, urging authorities for “immediate disclosure of the whereabouts” of both to their families and legal counsel and to “guarantee their visitation rights”.

EHRC has also reiterated that the relevant authorities should closely monitor that the state of emergency proclamation is implemented in a manner that strictly adheres to human rights principles.
