House of Fed Approves Formation of Ethiopia’s 11th Regional State

ADDIS ABABA – The House of Federation has approved the formation of South West Ethiopia Region as the eleventh state of the East African nation.

People of West Omo, Bench-Sheko, Dawro, Kafa, Sheka zones as well as Konta Special District of voted overwhelmingly for a formation of a federal region on Sept 30, with 93.9 percent choosing an autonomous rule.

On Saturday, the upper house of Ethiopian parliament ratified the result after discussion on a report and recommendation presented by Birtukan Mideksa, the Chairwoman of the Board, and the Administrative Boundaries and Peace Building Standing Committee of the House.

The approval of the referendum result will pave a way for the South West people of Ethiopia to break away from Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ (SNNP) Regional state.

A similar referendum two years ago saw Sidama Zone part ways from the same SNNP Regional state and form the 10th  Regional state in Africa’s second-most populous nation.
