Ethiopia Receives 800,000 Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine Support from China

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia on Sunday received 800,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine donation from China, bringing the amount of vaccine Support Beijing gave to Addis Ababa to 1.8 million doses.

After receiving the vaccines from the Chinese Ambassador Zhao Zhiyuan, Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse expressed her “sincere appreciation” for Beijing’s for the vaccine.

“My sincere appreciation for the continued support of the Chinese government for donating the fourth round of COVID-19 vaccine,” said Dr. Lia,

“These doses will further strengthen our effort to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic and improve vaccine access to our community,” the Minister added.

Ambassador Zhao, on his part, said the donation is a part of China’s President, Xi Jinping, pledge to speed up the delivery of 2 billion doses of vaccines to the world this year.

The Ambassador also said his country will “do its best to continue vaccine assistance to Ethiopia and to promote bilateral exchange and cooperation in the public health sector.”

Ethiopia started vaccinating its nationals on March 13, 2021. Since then, it has provided nearly 4.3 doses of vaccine to the public while at least 3.2 people fully vaccinated against the virus.

The East African Nation plans to vaccinate at least 22 million people against COVID-19 by January.
