Over 12, 900 Quintal Food Aid Distributed in Drought-hit Borena

ADDIS ABABA – Over 27, 900 quintal of food assistance have been distributed to communities affected by drought in Borena zone of Oromia Regional state, an official said Sunday.

Low-rainfall induced drought is having devastating consequences on livelihoods of residents in Borena with many in the area relying on livestock herding and subsistence farming.

It has already left more than 166,000 people in need of humanitarian aid, according to estimates.

Debebe Zewdie, spokesman of the National Disaster Risk Management, told ENA that measure are being taken to support them.

The first round of 27, 900 quintal food aid reached the area and have  been distributed to the people, he said.

The food assistance includes 12, 400 quintal of wheat, 6, 000 quintal of rice and 3, 500 nutrient foods, among others.

More assistance will continue to reach the communities, he said, alongside the rehabilitating work.

The Borana is prone to recurring droughts and consequent loss of livestock.
