Ethiopia registers over 200 new COVID-19 cases

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia registered 203 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the nationwide tally to nearly 279, 000, its health ministry said.

Three new deaths and 43 more recoveries were reported on the same day, bringing the death toll to 4,374 and total recoveries to 262,968, the ministry said.



Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, has so far reported the highest COVID-19 caseload in the East Africa region.

Ethiopia currently has at least 223 severe cases, said the ministry that puts the confirmed active cases count nationwide at 11, 576.

The severe cases are currently receiving medical treatments in Covid hospitals.

Health officials have also continued to push ahead with its vaccination campaign that started in Mid March,this year.

They provided a total of 4, 348 people on Tuesday, bringing the number of vaccine doses administered, so far, to 2,184, 338.

The Ministry of health launched its vaccination campaign on March 13 – a week after it received 2.2 million AstraZeneca vaccines from the COVAX Facility. The country also received Sinopharm, and Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines from China and US, respectively.

The East African nation confirmed its first Coronavirus infection on March 13, last year. To date, it has confirmed a total of 278, 920 cases after testing close to 3 million people.
