ADDIS ABEBA – National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced on Wednesday the official conclusion of candidates’ registration for 2021 national polls after extending its deadline several times.
The late opening of office for registration, transport problem and other related challenges forced the board to postpone the deadline.
In a statement Wednesday, the board said “candidates’ registration for the upcoming general elections has officially ended yesterday March 9, 2021”.
Apart from cases that the board could look into as special circumstances, the registration period has concluded, it said.
The list of candidates name registered to complete in the 2021 election will soon be revealed to general public, the board added.
The extension of candidates’ registration has already created a knock-on effect on the election calendar. Last week, NEBE officials decided for voters’ registration to take place from March 25 to April 23, 2021.
As per NEBE election calendar, Ethiopia will hold the 6th parliamentary election this year, on June 5, 2021.
