Gov’t Officials Express Condolences over Death of Dr Tibebe

ADDIS ABABA – Top government officials including President and prime minister of Ethiopia, have expressed their deep sorrow over the passing away of Laureate Dr. Tibebe Yemanebirhan.

The late Laureate Tibebe was a distinguished clinician, research scientist, and a respected public health leader with decades of experience leading multinational research and training institutes, according to Ministry of Health.



The laurate was also a goodwill Ambassador for Guinea Worm Eradication Program in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad, and Mali.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed extended condolence message for beloved ones of the deceased and all Ethiopians on Sunday, while President Sahlework praised Dr. Tibebe’s sincere commitment in his various works which brought him respect among his colleagues.

Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse said the world laureate “will be missed not only for his work but also for who he was”.

Apart from his major contribution in the health science arena, Dr. Tibebe was known for his advocacy work for the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases. He was also a member of Ethiopia’s National Reconciliation Commission formed by the government in February, 2019.

“My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” Dr. Lia concluded.
