Abiy Confers with IMF Managing Director over Various Issues

ADDIS ABEBA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva held a telephone conversation on the ongoing economic reforms in Ethiopia.

“My thanks to Abiy Ahmed Ali for our discussion today,” said Georgieva, after the discussion late Tuesday.

The IMF Managing Director confirmed that the discussion was focused on various topics but mentioned
“Ethiopia’s challenges and actions to reform the economy” was one of them.

Prime Minister Abiy has made rapid changes to Ethiopia’s state controlled political and economic space since becoming prime minister in 2018.

His government has begun introducing economic reforms, including preparing to open state-controlled sectors such as telecommunications to foreign investors and establishing stock market.

The reform has recently been challenged by several factors including challenges emanating from coronavirus pandemic and security.

Both Stress on Coop

Abiy and Grorgieva have discussed on how to tackle inequality and build resilience to climate change.

“Global cooperation is even more important during these challenging times,” the IMF Managing Director said.

Prime Minister Abiy confirmed that he had “a good call earlier… with Georgieva on measures to close the wealth gap”.

The two also discussed on the need to work “together on climate change through the Green Legacy initiative and global cooperation for economic recovery from COVID19”, according to Abiy.
