ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia on Tuesday bade farewell to Mesfin Woldemariam (Prof), veteran human rights advocate and politician.
Prof Mesfin died in Addis Ababa last week, due to health complications while receiving medical treatment, at the age of 90.
His coffin stayed at Addis Ababa University hall, with many fans, officials and diplomats saying their final goodbyes, before it was driven to Holy Trinity Cathedral, where his body laid to rest.
Speaker of the parliament, Tagesse Chaffo, Deputy Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie, President of Oromia Regional State, Shimelis Abdissa and other high ranking government officials attended the funeral ceremony.
The human rights activist Mesfin had been known as a critical figure of successive governments.
A geography professor by training, he wrote more than a dozen books on politics, history and culture. He was hailed as ‘Ethiopia’s human rights Hero’.
“Professor Mesfin was a towering scholar, teacher, historian and politician but above all a dedicated, fearless and committed human rights champion and defender, who will be remembered as Ethiopia’s human rights hero” said Daniel Bekele, Chief Commissioner of EHRC.
He was also a prolific commentator on newspapers and later on social media.
