UN Secretary-General, Leaders of 40 Nations to Attend AU Summit

ADDIS ABEBA – Leaders of 38 African union member states and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres are scheduled to attend the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union.

The summit will be held from 9-10 February at the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa.

Ministry of foreign affairs said 38 leaders of member states of the AU have confirmed their participation. Prime ministers of Canada, Norway as well as Palestine will also participate in the session.

Preparations are finalized to host the leaders, officials and other guests, Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today.

“A total of 45 leaders and ministers have confirmed their participation in the sessions till” Monday, said Gisila Shawel, Acting Director of Protocol Affairs.

Of the total confirmed leaders and ministers, 31 are presidents, 4 prime ministers, and 3 vice presidents as well as 7 foreign ministers, he added.

High-level global officials, including UN Secretary-General Guterres and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom, are expected to address the Summit, whose theme for the year is, “Silencing the Guns; Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development.”

Up until Monday, close to 9,000 persons were registered online to attend the sessions.
