Teenage Worku Wins again at World Athletics Cross County Permit Series

ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia’s teenage phenomena Tadese Worku posted an impressive performance as he won the the Cross Internacional de Itálica in Santiponce today.

Today’s triumph is Tadese’s second consecutive victory in this season’s World Athletics Cross County Permit series.

A warm temperatures greeted runners in the men’s 9.9 kilometres event in this town near Seville famous for the ruins of the Roman city Italica saw the race reduced to a group of four early on following an acceleration from the United States’ Paul Chelimo, the Olympic 5,000 metres silver medallist.

US team-mate Shadrack Kipchirchir and Eritrea’s Aron Kifle followed him but it was Tadese, winner of last weekend’s World Athletics Cross Country Permit series race in Elgoibar, who looked the easiest. That proved to be the case as shortly after halfway, Tadese broke away on his own to run to a 16-second victory in 27min 31sec.
“I’m really pleased with the win, the circuit and the people,” Tadese told World Athletics.

“I felt very strong throughout, as was the case last Sunday in Elgoibar,” he said. “I’ll now return to my base in Addis Ababa where I train with Selemon Barega and Telahun Haile Bekele, among others.”

Tadese, whose athletics idol is Kenenisa Bekele, has big goals for the 2020 track season: “I would like to make the national team for the Tokyo Olympics over 5000m.”
