Fresh Conflict in Ben.-Gumuz Claims Eight Lives

ADDIS ABABA – Security officials said on Monday at least eight people were killed and 11 others injured in a conflict in Metekel zone of Benishangul-Gumuz regional state.

The conflict occurred in Mandura district of the Zone after individuals attacked the administrator of Mariam kebele with a knife and took away his gun, a state-run news agency ENA reported.

Police are yet to identify the people behind the attack, according to Abera Bayeta, the region’s security bureau head.

Properties have been damaged apart from lives lost, he said, adding, people who sustained injuries in the conflict are receiving medical treatment at Pawe Hospital.

The security bureau head said efforts are underway to stabilize the area and detain those responsible for the conflict with the help of the federal police.

In April, a conflict, which started as a disagreement over cash between laborers and turned into ethnic friction, claimed more than a dozen lives in the Metekel zone of the region, which borders Sudan and South Sudan.
