National Broadcaster Gets New CEO

ADDIS ABEBA – Members of parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of Nigussie Mitiku (PhD) as head of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.

Members of parliament have endorsed the appointment of the new Chief Executive Officer of the national broadcaster with four abstentions.

Dr. Nigussie has previously served as president of Debre Markos University.

He replaced Seyoum Mekonnen, who recently resigned from his post, after serving as CEO the Corporation for three years. Seyoum’s reason has not been disclosed by government whip who presented the new nominee for approval for MPs

Meaza Ashenafi officiated the swearing in ceremony of Nigussie in the parliament. Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation formerly known as Ethiopian Television was established in 1964 with assistance from the British firm, Thomson.

It was created to highlight the Organization of African Unity (OAU) meeting that took place in Addis Abeba that same year. Color television broadcast began in 1982 in commemoration of the founding of Workers’ Party of Ethiopia (WPE).
