Ethiopia, Canada Keen to Strengthen Ties

ADDIS ABABA – President Sahlework Zewde held talks with Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, in Vancouver where they agreed to strengthen the cooperation between their nations.

The President told Trudeau that Canada has been a key partner to Ethiopia, even in difficult times, her office said in a statement on Wednesday.

Canada is more known for its humanitarian support to Ethiopia, with minor business interests. There have been few visits of Canadian officials since Trudeau won his first election in 2015, including by its Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan.

President Sahlework too believes there many areas for two countries to cooperate in. Ethiopia is keen to strengthen its economic cooperation with Canada, said the President.

Sahlework’s office said Prime Minister Trudeau praised the Ethiopian government’s efforts to elevate the country to a better status. He pledged that Canada’s support to the east African nation will continue.

Trudeau had a planned trip to Ethiopia but reportedly canceled to it following allegations at home over political meddling in the case of a major Canadian engineering company with connections to Ethiopia.
