Ethiopian Marathon Runners win in Beijing, Frankfurt

Ethiopia’s Deresa Geleta and Buzunesh Gudeta triumphed in the Beijing and Mainova Frankfurt Marathons on Sunday, respectively.

Buzunesh claimed the top honor in the women’s race, winning the 40th edition of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon.

Buzunesh missed the course record by just 17 seconds but took a big slice off her personal best with 2:19:27, an improvement of more than three minutes.

“I never thought that I could produce a performance like that. I’ve never been so happy,” the 26-year-old said.

Kenyans Winfridah Moseti and Sharon Arusho were second and third in 2:20:55 and 2:22:07 respectively.

Brimin Misoi of Kenya successfully defended his title, clocking 2:04:53 to win the men’s event in Frankfurt. Ethiopians Mulugeta Uma and Guye Adola followed in second and third with 2:06:47 and 2:07:44, respectively.

Deresa tops men’s marathon in Beijing

Ethiopia’s Deresa took the men’s gold in Sunday morning’s 2023 Beijing Marathon as his compatriot Yihunilign Adane finished second.

Deresa clocked two hours, seven minutes and 41 seconds to cross the finish line first, per Xinhua report.

His compatriot Yihunilign Adane finished second with just a second behind. Kenya’s Felix Kipkoech pocketed bronze in 2:07:44.

The women’s race saw a Kenyan clean sweep on the podium, as Chepkirui won the women’s gold in 2:21:57, followed by Janet Ruguru and veteran Helah Kiprop in second and third places.
