PM Abiy in Beijing for Belt and Road Forum

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has embarked on an official visit to China ahead of the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

PM Abiy, along with his ministerial delegation, touched down in Beijing where they were received by China’s Premier Li Qiang.

Abiy and Li later held bilateral discussions on ways of enhancing economic cooperation between Ethiopia and China.

They also presided over the signing of 12 cooperation agreements and two letters of intent in various fields.

The agreements cover a range of areas including cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, Global Development Initiative, green development, and digital economy, per the Chinese embassy in Addis Ababa.

PM Abiy will attend the two-day Belt and Road Forum (BRF) scheduled to be officially opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday.

The event will have Abiy and Xi meet again following their bilateral talks in Johannesburg in which they agreed on a temporary debt service suspension.

The BRF, which will bring together representatives from more than 140 countries, will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The forum will issue a document summarizing the consensus reached by the participating parties and set direction and key areas of cooperation for the next stage, per Chinese officials.
