South Korean FM Embarks on Three-day Visit to Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen conferred with his South Korean counterpart, Park Jin, who began his three-day official visit to Ethiopia today.

The two foreign ministers met hours after the South Korean top diplomat Park Jin arrived in Addis Ababa on Tuesday morning.

“They discussed ways of further strengthening cooperation between the countries in bilateral and multilateral venues,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia said in a statement.

Per Demeke, an agreement has been reached to further consolidate the diplomatic ties in the areas of trade, investment, and development cooperation for the benefit of respective peoples.

We have also reaffirmed to expedite our partnership on multilateral fora on issues of mutual interest, the minister said.

South Korea is among the five countries elected into the UN Security Council as non-permanent members this year. It will serve for a two-year term starting in January.

Demeke has also congratulated South Korea for being elected into the UNSC and pledged to work closely on matters of mutual interest and concerns affecting the African Continent, in general, and the Horn of Africa, in particular.

South Korea is the second East Asian country to send its top diplomat to Ethiopia in the span of a week following Japan’s foreign minister visit last Friday.

Foreign Minister Park described Ethiopia as a gateway to Africa.

Park noted that South Korea and Ethiopia will continue cooperating in key areas to elevate their overall strategic partnership through bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

During his three-day stay, the South Korean Foreign Minister will hold more discussions with senior Ethiopian Government officials to discuss ways of further strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries.

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the commencement of formal diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and the East Asian nation.
