Workneh Gebeyehu Secures Second term as IGAD Executive Secretary

The Assembly of IGAD heads state and government has reappointed Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD) to serve as executive Secretary of the regional bloc for a second term.

Workneh took over the role from Ambassador Mahboub Maalim in November 2019 becoming the sixth executive Secretary in IGAD’s history.

In their summit in Djibouti today, leaders of the Igad member states reappointed him to stay in charge of the regional bloc for additional four years.

“I am deeply grateful for the Assembly’s full confidence in me as they have extended my tenure for a second 4-year term,” Ethiopia’s former foreign minister Workneh said.

The Executive Secretary has also congratulated Djibouti on assuming the chairmanship of the organization at the Summit, replacing Sudan.

Djibouti President Ismael Omar Guelleh also took over the Chairmanship of the IGAD after Sudan’s term came to an end.

The Assembly also adopted and inked the IGAD Treaty as per the Directive ita previous Ordinary Session four years ago.

“The Treaty confirms the Regional Economic Community (REC) status for the organization and aligns it with sister RECs,” the bloc said.
