Ghana will Host the 2023 African Games, AU Confirms

The African Union (AU) on Wednesday confirmed that the 13th African Games will be held in Ghana, after the conclusion of a negotiated agreement the signing of a negotiated agreement on the management and organization of the competition.

The African Games, a multi-disciplinary sports competition, is the exclusive property of the AU, owned on behalf of its member states.

The AU, Ghana, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), and the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC) signed the negotiated deal on the sidelines of the AU leaders summit in Addis Ababa.

It come after a series of negotiations in which the impasses surrounding the organization of the Pan-African competition were finally resolved under the directions of leaders of Ghana and the AU.

“ANOCA and AASC will be allocated some percentages of the revenue that will be generated from marketing and sponsorships of the African Games in Ghana,” the AU said.

Under the agreement, the AACS, on its part, said it is entrusted with the sport’s technical aspects of the Games, preserving the roles and functions of the Association of African Sports Confederations.

The signatories will establish an ad-hoc technical committee for the organization of the African Games 2023 in Ghana.

Their reps are also expected to visit the host nation within weeks of the signing of the deal to check on its existing capabilities and facilities to successfully hold the Games ahead of the confirmation of the final dates for the Games organization.

The African Games, which involves young athletes from all 55 African Union member states, are held every four years – one year prior to the Olympic Games.

The continental competition was established by African Ministers of Sports in 1965 to promote the development of elite African athletes, Pan-Africanism, and Cultural Exchanges among the AU Member States.
