NBE Begin Sending 5 Bln Birr to Mekelle after PM’s first Meeting with TPLF Officials 

ADDIS ABABA – The National Bank of Ethiopia has begun sending five billion Birr to Mekelle after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s meeting with officials of the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF).

The PM met with the peace talks committee of the TPLF for the first time, along with the Federal government officials, in Dawuro Zone of southern Ethiopia on Friday.

Participants of the meeting from the TPLF delegation include Getachew Reda and Tsadkan Gebretensae. 

The discussion – held at the Halala Kela cluster section of the Koysha dine project – evaluated the ongoing implementation of the peace deal, and ended with directions set on issues requiring further attention.

Accordingly, “PM Abiy passed decisions about increasing flights, banking and other matters that would boost trust and ease lives of civilians,” the National Security Advisor to the PM office Redwan Hussein said in a tweet on Friday.

As per the PM’s directions, Redwan further disclosed today that the National Bank has begun sending 5 billion Birr to Mekelle to be dispensed starting Monday.”

“Its multifold increment from hitherto 20 million” birr, the national security advisor said.

in addition, Redwan said Ethiopian Airlines also increased its flights from three flights a week to 5 days as of Saturday. The airline resumed its regular flights to Alula Aba Nega International Airport of Mekelle city on Dec 28, 2022.
