ADDIS ABABA – Ethio Telecom announces the restoration of telecom service in Mekelle, the capital city of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, today.
CEO of the telco Frehiwot Tamiru says Mekelle is among 27 cities and towns in the region where the telecom services have been restored over the past weeks.
The telco says the restoration comes after the completion of repair to 981 kilometer-long fiber optic cables from a total of 1,800kms needing repair.
More than 60 banks have managed to resume operations due to the restoration of telecom services, according to the CEO.
The telecom services restoration to Mekelle was announced on the same day as Ethiopian Airlines resumed its daily flights to the city..
The first commercial flight left Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to Mekelle at 06:00 local time on Wednesday.
The flight was interrupted for about 19 months due to the conflict in northern Ethiopia.
The airline says it will increase the daily flights to Mekelle to two, starting from Friday due to a growing demand on the route.
