PM Abiy Inaugurates Addis Ababa’s First Science Museum

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has inaugurated the newly built Science Museum at the heart of Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.

The Museum, built on seven hectares of land, consists of two multipurpose structures – a ring-shaped building and a dome.

Its circular shape symbolizes perpetual development and human wisdom, says the PM Office, adding it “is a testament to Ethiopia’s dedication to the future of technology”.

The museum has its own halls dedicated to permanent and fleeting science and art exhibitions.

The museum is also equipped with a solar system that will generate the electricity required for the facility.

Together with the official opening of the Science Museum, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also launched the technology startups and public-private institution exhibition.

The exhibition will be on display and open to the public for the next several weeks, says the PM Office.

The inauguration ceremony was followed by the official opening of the first annual Pan-African Artificial Intelligence conference that is taking place at the Science Museum.

During the opening, PM Abiy highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence in Ethiopia‘s digital transformation agenda anchored in Digital Ethiopia 2025.

“As we inaugurate Ethiopia’s Science Museum; launch a technology exhibition & open the first Pan-African AI conference today, all are essential for networking, learning & co-creating across the continent, as we strive to empower Africa through digital transformation,” he tweeted later.

The museum is a part of the Chinese-backed Ethiopian Riverside Green Development Project Phase II which was handed over to the government on Monday.

The project, apart from the science museum, includes a children’s playground, a wedding garden, and other recreational facilities.

Chinese Ambassador Zhao Zhiyuan described the project as a symbol of Ethiopia-China friendship.

“We are confident that it will drive the development of science and technology, and be a preferred choice for conferences, gatherings, weddings, and children’s activities with important social, tourism, and commercial value,” the Ambassador said.
