L&R Breaks Ground on Manufacturing Plant in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA – Lohmann & Rauscher (L&R), a multinational medical device producer, broke ground on a manufacturing plant project in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) and L&R officials attended the ground-breaking ceremony at Bole Lemi-2 Industrial Park.

The company, headquartered in Germany and Austria, will build the manufacturing plant on 1.5 hectares of land, making it the German-Austrian Group’s first production site in Africa.

Bole Lemi IP specializes in Apparel & Textile and 100% exportable products.

L&R will be engaged in the production of medical products, such as surgical clothing, for export markets.

At the ceremony, EIC’s Deputy head Daniel Teressa assured L&R officials of the government’s commitment to support the project.

L&R is a global company represented in markets around the world with over 5,400 employees, 51 subsidiaries, and more than 130 selected distribution partners.

Meanwhile, the EIC signed an agreement with Redawa Motors Plc to set up the first private and locally developed Industrial Park.

Redawa Motors operates a vehicle assembly plant built on 49 hectares of land in Dire Dawa City administration.

The agreement upgrades the company to Redawa IP while expanding its current operational pace. The project will be implemented in 116 hectares of land and has over 5 billion birr investment capital, officials say.

The Redawa IP will host a range of industries, including automotive parts assembly, copper products and construction input factories.
