Ethiopia Calls on Countries to Partake in Internet Governance Forum in Addis

ADDIS ABABA – Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla (Ph.D.), has called on all countries to take part in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Ethiopia.

The country is under preparation to host the Forum that will be held between November 28 to December 2, 2022 in Addis Ababa.

The Technology Minister made the call during roundtable discussant in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2022 that is taking place at the ITU Headquarters in Geneva.

Appearing as guest speaker, Belete said ICT is one of the priority areas identified by the government of Ethiopia to accelerate the economic growth and development of the country, although there are challenges.

The Minister highlighted various measures taken by the government to set up legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as infrastructure, power and Connectivity to reap results from the sector.

In connection to that, the government is encouraging digital literacy, innovation, and Start-ups in the sector, the Minister said.

Belete also had bilateral discussions with Houlin Zhao, the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, and participants at the forum about maximizing the benefits of the sector in Ethiopia.

WSIS Forums are organized each year and provide opportunities to discuss the role of ICTs in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and targets.
