Ethiopia, Norway Eye Collaboration on Climate Change-related Issues
ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopian Plan and Development Minister, Fitsum Assefa (PhD) held talks with Norway’s Environment Minister Hans Brattskar on strategic issues related to climate change.
The discussion between Fitsum and Brattskar was held in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.
The two sides exchanged views on “overall strategic issues related to climate change”, the Ministry of Plan and Development said.
They also discussed the preparation of the second phase strategic plan for investment and climate change mitigation by the Norway, and the overall coordination of the support.
During the meeting, Plan minister Fitsum recalled that Ethiopia has been championing the issue of climate change globally as well as domestically.
The country demonstrated its commitment by including a climate resilient green economy as one of the strategic pillars of its development plan, she said.
The commitment is also demonstrated through its actions in generating renewable energy, said Fitsum, mentioning the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam hydroelectric power project and the green legacy initiative as major examples.
Norway’s minister Brattskar, on his part, mentioned that Ethiopia is the main recipient of the Norwegian government’s climate change-related programs support from Africa.
Norway is committed to continue supporting Ethiopia in forestry and sustainable development areas, he added.
Both officials agreed to strengthen the collaboration between the two governments on climate change-related issues, aligning to the government’s priority agendas and the revised restructuring of the sector, as per the Ministry of Planning.
